I added it only because I had one sitting around and was curious as to the effect of plugging it into the signal path. Added a Audioquest Jitterbug electrical noise filter to the USB output to the DAC: I was astounded by the effect that adding a $60 Jitterbug could have. Steps that I have taken to improve the sound of the Pro-ject streamer and steps that I am planning to take are:ġ. I have purchased a network extender which will allow me to use the Pro-ject streamer using Ethernet and turn off its built-in WiFi which I will try as an upcoming experiment. I have heard that using an Ethernet connection can sound better, but starting off with just WiFi was easier for me. That's at least a $300 savings for a decent linear power supply (Even though the wall plug looks like a typical cheap wall wart). The power supply on the Pro-ject streamer is apparently well sorted out so that adding a linear power supply doesn't add much improvement.Buying a more expensive streamer such as an Innuos Zen Mini + Innuos Linear Power Supply would preclude some of these experiements. It is not particularly expensive which allow optimization of other factors that MIGHT improve sound quality. These are some things about it that I liked: I'm getting good sound out of a Pro-ject Stream Box Ultra S2. What would people suggest I look at with a budget of say £1000? Are there any obvious choices that are head and shoulders above the rest? To my ears, there were significant differences and I am willing to pay for a good quality unit. I have done blind test between my SQB and a standard one and also with/without the uprated PSU. I know some people say that whatever happens before the DAC is just 0s and 1s, but, I would dispute that and strongly believe that the "digital transport" plays a important role. I am not interested in any built-in DAC as I will be using my external one - just something to take files from NAS and squirt them out of SPDIF socket! Also, quite happy to use phone/tablet app to control. The sound from it is absolutely superb, but, it is getting a bit old in the tooth and the support is getting quite patchy.Īll my music files are stored on a NAS and that is all I am interested in playing - do not want Spotify or any online services. This is fed into one of his valve-based DACs, and then through a series of good amps/speakers (approx. It was modified by a DAC guru in Poland (Lukas Fikus, aka The Lampizator) and he also supplied a really good PSU for it. I have been using a Squeezebox Duet for a number of years.
